The West Coast rugby community and the wider New Zealand sporting world are mourning the sudden passing of Blair “Murf” Mirfin, a respected rugby player, successful farmer, devoted father, and loyal friend whose loss has left countless people heartbroken.
Born into a proud farming and rugby-loving family from Ikamatua, just north of Greymouth, Blair carried with him the values of hard work, resilience, and camaraderie throughout his life. He attended Nelson College as a boarder in Fell House, following in the footsteps of his older brothers, Andrew and Nathan, both of whom also represented West Coast rugby at a high level.
Blair earned widespread respect for his achievements on the rugby field. A tough and uncompromising prop forward, he played for Marist from 1997 to 2001 and was a valued member of the club’s Division One championship-winning team in 2001. Over the years, he built an outstanding rugby career that included 86 first-class appearances for Nelson Bays, Marlborough, West Coast, and the NZ Divisional XV. Between 2009 and 2011, Blair proudly wore the famous red and white hoops of West Coast Rugby 26 times, leaving a lasting impression on teammates, opponents, and supporters alike.
While Blair’s rugby accomplishments were remarkable, those who knew him best remember him most for the man he was away from the game. Despite his fierce presence on the field, “Murf” was known off it as a gentle giant with a warm heart, an infectious sense of humor, and unwavering loyalty to his mates and family. His character, friendship, and camaraderie made him deeply admired within the rugby community and beyond.
Beyond rugby, Blair was a dedicated farmer, a loving father to Tori, Lily, and Max, and someone who valued family and friendship above all else. Tributes pouring in from friends, former teammates, clubs, and supporters reflect the enormous impact he had on those around him. Stories of his laughter, strength, and larger-than-life personality will continue to be shared for years to come.
As the West Coast rugby community pauses for moments of silence before senior matches in his honor, Blair Mirfin’s legacy lives on through the memories he created and the lives he touched both on and off the field.
Heartfelt condolences are extended to the entire Mirfin family, Blair’s children, friends, teammates, and the wider rugby community during this incredibly difficult time.
May Blair “Murf” Mirfin rest peacefully and forever be remembered with respect, admiration, and love.
