The downtown community of Flint is mourning the loss of Steve Tessmer, whose passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of family, friends, employees, artists, musicians, and countless community members. Known as the driving force behind Soggy Bottom Bar, Steve Tessmer helped create more than just a local establishment — he built a gathering place that became a second home for many. For nearly 30 years, Soggy Bottom Bar served as one of downtown Flint’s most beloved “third spaces,” where people from all walks of life came together to enjoy music, art, food, conversation, and friendship.
Those who knew Steve remember him as a man with a strong personality and a genuine commitment to the people around him. While some described him as tough or outspoken, many also recognized his generosity, loyalty, and unwavering support for the Flint community. Through Soggy Bottom, Steve provided opportunities for employees, local artists, musicians, touring bands, and creatives who needed a place to perform, connect, and be seen.
